Sea to marvel at - On the way along the Baltic Sea coast
The Baltic Sea invites holidaymakers to active exploration tours all year round. Whether actively on water, with one of the many water sports, or actively on land on foot or by bike. Here in the far north of Germany, cyclists in particular will find ideal conditions for long tours. The extensive and flat landscape with salt marshes, forests and steep cliffs provides the necessary variety. Of course, classic brick buildings and magnificent lighthouses are not to be missed here. The landscape welcomes cyclists with a unique variety and makes you want to go on an extensive discovery tour from Kiel to Timmendorfer Strand. In addition to the varied nature, plenty of fresh sea air and idyllic little towns, the cycle tour is also worthwhile for summer festivities such as the well-known Kiel Week as well as the Travemünde Week, which attract millions of visitors year after year.
Must-sees in the harbour city of Kiel
Before cycling towards Timmendorfer Strand, it is worth visiting the beautiful harbour city. Due to its fantastic location directly on the water, a harbour tour is of course recommended to experience the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein from the right side. A stroll through Kiel's old town leads to the idyllic Ratsdienergarten with the charming Kleiner Kiel lake, which invites you to relax, especially in the summer months. The highlight and only a pleasant ferry ride away from Kiel is the Baltic resort of Laboe. There you will find the naval memorial and the famous submarine, which is a museum about the circumstances of the navy before and during the Second World War.
Tip: A visit to Kiel is especially worthwhile during Kiel Week, which takes place every year in June. The sailing regatta has been held in Kiel since the end of the 19th century and is considered one of the most fascinating sailing events in the world.
Hotel Tip:
Not far from Kiel's city centre, the Romantik Hotel Kieler Kaufmann welcomes guests with a direct view of the Kiel Fjord. In addition to the fantastic location, the Romantik Hotel delights with excellent cuisine in the in-house restaurants. The Michelin-starred Ahlmanns enchants with modern, fresh dishes and versatile flavours. In the SPA area, guests will find a pool and sauna as well as numerous massages and cosmetic treatments.
After an exciting day in Kiel, a delicious dinner at the Romantik Hotel Kieler Kaufmann and a restful night in the cosy rooms, the next day you set off on your bike towards Fehmarn. On the way, you can marvel at the extensive landscape and switch off from everyday life during the pleasant breeze. On the 72-kilometre bike tour from Kiel to Timmendorfer Strand, the small town of Preetz is the first stop after a good hour's ride. The shoemaker's profession once became famous in the cobbler's town, which is why you can find out about the manufacture as well as the history of Preetz wooden shoes in the Preetz Wooden Shoe Museum. After a short stop in the town, the tour continues by bike towards Bösdorf and from there on to Sierksdorf by the sea. From Sierksdorf, it's a leisurely 10-kilometre ride along the water to Timmendorfer Strand. With a leisurely total cycling time of about 4 hours, the route is ideal for a day trip through beautiful Schleswig-Holstein.
Timmendorfer Strand
After the sporty bike ride, you will reach Germany's most famous beach with its 7 kilometres of sandy beach and thousands of colourful beach chairs. There is hardly any high or low tide here, which is why the sea is particularly peaceful and invites you to take a long swim. In addition to the beautiful sea, the rest of nature around Timmendorfer Strand is also full of bright colours. The Kurpark in particular is ideal for a shady walk. For animal fans, the underwater world at Sea Life has a lot to offer. There you can discover sharks, rays and sea turtles in about 40 tanks. A visit to the fishing port in Niendorf, a district of Timmendorfer Strand, is also worthwhile, as time has almost stood still there and you feel transported back to old fishing times.
Hotel Tip:
In a quiet location, a little away from the hustle and bustle of Timmendorfer Strand, the Romantik Hotel Fuchsbau welcomes its guests in a "hyggeliger" atmosphere. The comfortably furnished rooms and suites are the ideal place to relax after an active day on the bike. The 700 m2 SPA area also invites you to relax. The in-house restaurant in the modern country house ambience serves traditional as well as innovative delicacies made from regional products and herbs from the herb garden.
