Solar do Castelo

The impressive St Georges Castle offers a unique view of the city. Its oldest parts have been dated to the 6th century, when it was taken by the Romans, the Visigoths and finally the Moors. The Castelo served as the royal residence of the Moors until Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, took it in 1147 with the help of the European Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. Castelo de São Jorge houses a typical set of houses inside its walls, including the romantic boutique hotel Solar do Castelo, itself built in the 18th century.

Lisbon has two unique buildings, the Mosteiro Jerónimus Monastery and the Torre de Belém, which are World Heritage Sites. These pearls of Manueline Gothic architecture impress with their vaults carved in stone and their wealth of decorative elements. A visit to the Castelo de São Jorge is not to be missed. It is the highest point of the city in the middle of the most typical districts, especially Alfama. The quaint yellow trams of line 28 cross the Alfama district and are perfect for exploring the city. 

In front of the St. Luzia lookout tower is the balcony that opens onto the river and allows a truly spectacular view over the old town of Alfama. It faces the Museum of Decorative Arts and makes for a great view of the city. 

Located at the beginning of Avenida de Liberdade in Restauradores Square. The cable car opened on 24 October 1885 and has been transporting locals and tourists on a short trip to Bairro Alto and the São Pedro de Alcântara Belvedere (observation tower) ever since.
